My Bedside Table

On: Friendships, my new apartment and a fresh start

On my bedside table there are two photos, neatly arranged in cute frames. They have several similarities. Both of them show me. In one of them you can see me with my best friend – Literally everyone ever who doesn’t know me very well thinks he’s my boyfriend and that he looks really young in it. The other is a picture of me, accompanied by the six girls who meant the most to me in the past year of my life, whom I spent my time in Paris with. You don’t see it, because you can’t look in the memory of the moment, but this photograph was taken in front of the Basilica Sacré Coeur in Montmartre. It was one of the first nights we used to go out in Paris and visit places together, more than a year ago.

Both are pictures of people who were important to me. Who are still important to me. Both, kind of, are pieces of my past that I brought with me to this new environment. Apart from them, there is almost everything new, unknown and different around me. I know that this little loneliness which is lurking in my head currently; it is just a side-effect of being alone in this new town, of not knowing anybody, of not knowing where and what and how the things roll. My little furnished room which reminds me of Paris in so many ways is really cute and situated in a nice neighborhood full of grandmas and mowed lawns and old trees not far from Uni. But still there’s this sad and empty feeling.

I know that this feeling will fade in a few months, or hopefully even in a few weeks.  It was just yesterday that I arrived here and unpacked my bags and I hope that this, like in the beginning of my year in Paris, is just a short phase in which I feel unpleasant and strange to this place, to this room, to this town.  I know that this apartment will former or later become my home, like the one in Paris did. And I know, on top of that all, that I will meet a lot of awesome people and that I’ll make new awesome friends here.

“Like I did in Paris”, it flickers through my mind as I’m watching the photo in the picture frame next to my bed. And that I should write the girls more often, that I should check on them so they don’t feel forgotten, because they’re clearly not.

I look at the other photo, and the painted picture in yellow, blue, red and purple that’s on the wall and I get to think about how I shouldn’t forget them neither, these two guys who offered them to me. Because I know we have these awesome special relationships and it would be a pity – well no, it would be a freaking load of shit if our paths would drift too much apart! I don’t want to lose them, how clichéd and facebook-comment-of-a-14-year-old-like this may sound; they’re in my heart.

Friendships are fun, they’re important but they’re also a lot of work. If you don’t call, if you don’t write, if you don’t communicate - you will not make it. This is not about one of two people in a friendship always asking how it goes and the other one not very regularly responding, this is about basic interest of the two of them in the other one’s life. In their hopes, their dreams, the daily life which seems boring sometimes, their fears and anxieties. Well, that really sounds like a whole lot of work, doesn’t it? But it’s worth it and you will appreciate that the other person, if it’s a real good friend of yours, is there for you and will do the same things for you, listens to you when you’re sad or angry and shares his moments with you, like you share yours with them, even when you two are apart.

I learned a lot of these lessons about friendship when I was abroad and I think it is really important to focus on the people you really love and who are truly good friends of yours to lead a happy life. I also know that it’s neither possible, nor healthy to try to maintain this kind of relationship with too many people. That’s the point where you should really listen into your mind and reflect on who you want to spend your time with and why, because somehow, the people we surround ourselves with, say very much about who we really are.

“Somehow, friends were always variables in my life. But some just shouldn’t be.”
– in a letter from friend of mine

The rest of my bedside table equipment consists only of new things, apart from the awful alarm clock that I’ve owned a few years now and guys, I desperately crave for a new one (because seriously, that’s a hell of a sound to wake up to!).  But unfortunately, I’m the kind of person who doesn’t buy new things if the old ones still work (and I think everyone should be that kind of person #tbh).

Not a lot of new things. Only the nice white grandma-like reading lamp which wears a Swedish woman’s name and a candle I bought at IKEA, too, one week ago, with a lovely vanilla smell. The rest of the table (which is also new and from this same furniture store- surprise, surprise!) is white and neat and in order and tidy. All of them things we all know I’m definitely NOT.

Maybe this is why I feel a bit strange and “not arrived” yet, too. I need to mess up this place a bit, spread my clothes all over the floor, get it a bit more untidy, more exciting and mostly more colorful. If not, I’m afraid of getting snow blind of all this whiteness! Who’s supposed to live with this? In moments like this I’m happy having bought all those endless postcards and posters to cover the walls with and to be such a brimming source of creativity (sometimes) and come up with many ideas to create a environment I feel at home in and anyone cool will, too.

I’m also happy, that I have a friend, who is like this, too - that made me such a beautiful piece of artwork I mentioned earlier that I have next to my bed (whose title is, meaningfully  “A-part?” ). You could say I work on friendships so they can color my life. The picture is not exactly on the bed side table, but we aren’t nitpickers here, are we?

My life is a draft

When I look at the last 4 blog entries, 3 of them never made it out to the internet.
I'm a draft person. Why? Because I can't finish things. At school I was always good at writing long essays and texts. And it may sound like a super nerd but sometimes my teachers discounted me points in assignments for writing too many pages. I couldn't find an end.
Or I start a thing and never continue. This is one of my greatest weaknesses in combination with my unbelievable impatience.

The absenceof these two features is also the main reason for the fact that I have not published a book yet.
I can't say I didn't write a book yet. The problem is I've never finished one (ok, one, but it was shitty and I was 14).
It's not that the lack of ideas, it's my impossibility of staying with one idea and not constantly changing it or discarding it for another. Sometimes, I hate myself for being that person. But I am that person.
"And I can't change. Even if I tried. Even if I wanted to."

I'm not going to finish those drafts, I know that. I guess, I hope that there is this one draft, waiting for me in the future. That won't be a draft. That will become a real story.
Something with a beginning, a middle and an end and not just one of those three in shattered pieces.
My life is full of drafts. My life is a draft itself, waiting to be continued. In one week, I'm starting University, a whole new chapter in my life. I will be a student again and I can't wait to be one.

But I know especially that fact will make it harder to continue things, like poetry or writing or drawing or other creative stuff but I love doing this nerdy arty weird things and I'm not planning to stop doing them. Or to become this boring kind of a person who is so stuck in work that she forgets about all her drafts. All her not yet finished chapters in word documents on her laptop, all her not yet figured out story lines, novels, songs or blog posts. I once said I was a writer. It's time to truly be one. And not just the girl who never finishes what she's starting.

We all crave for that one moment in the future, when she will finally finish a thing and it will be a good thing. How come I'm speaking of myself in Third-Person now?
I think I...

Precious Little Life

Vol. 1 of the "Scott Pilgrim" Series -
media.npr.org/
My friend lended me his copy of the first comic book I ever read. "Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life". I have to confess I watched the movie before, like two years ago. But I liked it. And the comic was awesome - read it (and you, thanks again for letting me borrow it). It was weird, funny and lovely.

But it's not about Scott Pilgrim or about the world (badum tss), it's the title of the book that struck me. Precious Little Life. First of all, the fact that the author put "little" in it, like he wanted to state: "life's not a big thing, you shouldn't take it so seriously". And further, because he described it as "precious". Not as "special" or "unique" or "awesome" or whatever. He chose precious. I loved that choice because I think that's what it's all about.

Seeing life as something you should appreciate.
I don't want to go on and on about YOLO-ing (did that already) or loving the little things in life (move on and read tumblr-blogs if you're into that kind of stuff). It just came to my mind like that and that's all you'll get.

What I like about my own little life, right now, is the fact that I've found a room (FINALLY, YEAH!) and I will move to Freiburg in two weeks and I'm so excited (and I just can't hide it).
And I've got a trip planned. Not that road trip I wanted so badly with sea and a car and everything... But a little sleep-over-in-a-tent-bike-trip. I hope the weather will not mess with us. And moreover, I want the road trip to happen nontheless (worst case: In spring). I'm going to visit Lea, too, who I met in Paris and we will have a blast (Bermuda-Dreieck reunited! :) )

Autumn is coming and I remember Paris walks and the last sunny days and I put on my headphones with that mixtape carrying the same name and enjoy my precious little life.

Restless Rest

What is there to do for me? When I was still at work (in Paris... *starts to sob uncontrollably*) there were a million things in my mind I'd rather do at this very moment.
But where have they gone? I can't find one of them.
What do I do? I look for a place to live in my new hometown, Freiburg (hopefully), desperately and every flat share rejects me.
I have breakfast and movie nights with my friends and I'm out clubbing sometimes, I try to catch up to my guitar skills - didn't play in a long time and when the weather is nice, I go for a walk, I sit down on the grass to write poems, I lie down and start to cry over sad german love songs on my iPod.

What I was listening to the last couple days
hwww.hoerbuch-blog.com/
The rest of my holiday free time I sit inside and play useless games on my phone and listen to audio books (No, not on audible.com, I'm not sponsored -I just go to the library, I'm sorry). 2048 has become my favourite number and I protect myself from zombies trying to cross my lawn and eat my brain. Yep, that's it, mostly. My life.

Don't start this. Just don't.
ironyca.files.wordpress.com

I know, in less than a month I will be fully occupied again with stuff from Uni, getting to know new people, keeping up my two other languages and books and all that, but for now I'm in that ultimate vacuousness, that blank space between one paragraph and another.

I'm just before the new chapter where a new storyline will begin. It feels awkward. It feels like I should make something out of this time, but I'm wasting it.
I feel kind of restless, like: I want to move, let's do something!
But then again, what's there to do? And so I end up on my bed again, with the video games and the audio books. I enjoy that, to be honest, but shouldn't there be more?

I 've come to believe it's the fact that I don't have an appartment in my new environment yet and my inner, repressed anxiety about the future is making me uncomfortable. I know it is going to work out in some way, it always works out eventually. But still... I just want to have it safe. I always have a plan B, but I really really don't want to use it. And what if plan B or C or even D don't work out?
In front of everyone, my parents, strangers, my friends I'm like: "Hey, no stress - I will find a thing, former or later". Gosh, I'd love to be as chilled out and relaxed about it as I pretend to be. I'm not. I'm a bag of nerves. I live in restless rest. I'm desperate. HELP!

Ok, calm down, Lotta. It's not that bad. This problem will be solved in less than a month, lay back, take a rest. You'll be fine.

EMF (Electronic Music Festival) 2014
What I really, absolutely want to do, is going on a trip. On a holiday. Because the only holiday I had was the festival at the beach in July I attended for 2 days (Electro Beach). Hell yes, it was awesome and "en plus" we had sun, fun and music - but only two days... It passed too quickly.
I'm not all about sunshine (instead I'm all about that bass), going to the pool and party all night - no in fact I want to go wherever I can go, just a holiday. I don't even care if it's Belgium, Poland, the Nederlands, France (again?!) or something further away. I wouldn't even mind the "Nordsee", one of the two seas at the coast of Germany.

The problem is only the appartment for October. I can't just leave now and hope for the best. That's why I'm still here writing and not freezing without any battery left in the woods with a friend and loads of good music and conversations (and maybe some tea). I imagine me driving hundreds of cilometres, I imagine cold wind and a cloudy sky and a grey unfriendly ocean and sand under my bare feet and a cozy blanket. I want it so badly, please, let me find a place at Freiburg - and then let me find one friend who is prepared to come with me.

The destination and the activities don't matter much to me, let's do whatever wherever. Just together. And just right now. So...

Who wants to go to the "plage" with me?

The Sun's Lie

Sun gazing through the clouds like
what up, I'm still here keeping you warm
but it's autumn and she is not as strong as she shone
just a few weeks ago
when we were still together
when she kissed the river
like we kissed
in a lovely, red and endless seeming romance
that ended, of course
Tell me sun, was I betrayed?

I'm back

Don't know what I was looking for when I went home. I found me alone. And sometimes I need someone to say: "You'll be alright. What's on your mind?"
Yellowcard

I stopped listening to Joshua Radin, I've maybe shed a tear on the train home. But it was hard to be sad and depressed. Firstly, there was an annoyed couple who sat across from us. And secondly, us -  I was with a good friend. When you leave with someone it isn't as terrible as when you leave alone. And I knew none of my German friends would stay there, we were the last to leave. I knew noone would come to the "Gare de l'est" the next time I will arrive there. That it would be completely different, even if it wasn't exactly a goodbye forever.

But in some ways it was. It was a goodbye to Paris, as my city. As in "Bitch, please. I'm not a tourist - I live here", the pride in my voice when I vocalized this sentence.
My workplace is no longer my workplace. It is "the place where I used to work" and, "au pire" (=for the worst) my room is no longer my room. It is the room of someone else, some new girl who'd come to live there the next year. It is not more than "the room I used to live in" now.

Maybe now, as I'm reflecting about all, the goodbye, maybe now is my time to cry over it. To realize that it's really over. That I can never go back.
Yes, I know that this is not the apocalypse it's just the end of a limited time period. I was conscious about that fact before the very beginning.
Yes, maybe I'm dramatizing and yes, I look forward to my studies and to my time as a student of "Medienkulturwissenschaften" (yeah, that word is a thing) and politics.
Yes, I know the best is yet to come. Or at least I hope for it.

But what if this was the best time? Like in some Green Day lyrics: "I hope you had the time of your life". For me, "The Time of Your Life" is an abstract thing. Maybe the time of your life is everytime. Every moment. The Now. You can make any time the time of your life. I'm looking into the future and I'm thankful that I can do this. That I am who I am. Born where I was born. Raised like I was raised. Hurt like I was hurt. Struck by love like I was struck so many times. Because all that made me me.

Now I'm back. But so what? It was an awesome time, I made awesome friends, I learned a lot about life, I got to know a city "vraiment", I fell in love, I found my own lines and borders, I learned a lot about myself, too. But I don't know all. Perhaps it's good to be obliged move on, so I can change, learn more and experience more.

Nostalgy is all well and good. I can't help to fall into it from time to time. But I don't dive into it, don't bathe my soul in it, don't let the shiny memories be the ideal of today's reality. I'm not that kind of person anymore. I have changed.

I'm back. I realize how few my real friends are. While my brothers are celebrating a on-going-two-weeks-party because my parents are out on holiday, I sit there, often alone, mostly with my best friend as my only companion, seldom with 4 other friends from whom two of them are my female cousins (#foreveralone). But I don't really care. I don't need that superficial kind of friendship. I take it if it's there but there are more important thing to focus on. More important people.

I'm back. And I'm cool with it.
